Wellington school zones

Wellington School Zones & Address Map

Enter a Wellington address to see every available home zone that covers it, then explore the schools behind the boundaries.

Wellington currently has 50 schools marked as operating enrolment schemes across 26 localities in BoundFor's Ministry-derived directory. Use the address checker because zones overlap and do not follow a fixed radius.

This count covers Wellington City only. Lower Hutt, Porirua and Upper Hutt are separate cities with their own zoned schools.

We use your address only for zone and travel-time checks. It isn't shared with schools.

Zone boundaries can change and mapping can be imprecise at an edge. Confirm your exact address and entitlement directly with the school before making an enrolment, rental or property decision.

How to check a Wellington school zone by address

Start with the full street address, including the suburb. The checker places that address against the available Ministry of Education boundary data and returns every matching home zone. That matters in Wellington because year levels overlap: one home can be in a primary zone, a separate intermediate zone and one or more secondary zones at the same time.

The closest school is not necessarily the school you are zoned for. Home zones are designed around roll capacity and the wider school network, not a simple kilometre radius. Boundaries may follow one side of a road, include an overlap area, or change after consultation. If the marker appears close to a line, contact the school office and ask it to confirm the exact address.

This page covers enrolment home zones. It is not about traffic speed zones outside school gates. For those, use NZTA's school speed-limit guidance.

Wellington school zones by area

These area summaries help you browse. The address result, not the suburb label, is what determines whether a child is in zone. Lower Hutt, Porirua and Upper Hutt are separate cities with their own zoned schools, not covered on this page.

Northern Wellington school zones

Tawa, Newlands and Johnsonville form Wellington's northern suburbs. Tawa and Johnsonville sit on the rail line running north from the city, each with several zoned schools; Newlands, just inland, has its own zoned schools too. Check the exact street before assuming the nearest school is the in-zone school.

What Wellington families should check next

An in-zone address gives a child the statutory entitlement to enrol at a state school with that home zone. An out-of-zone address does not make an application impossible, but the school must first decide that places are available. It then advertises the places, deadline and ballot date and applies the legal priority order.

If you are comparing a purchase or rental, save the zone result, check whether a boundary consultation is under way, and ask the school what proof of residence it requires. A genuine move out of zone after a child has enrolled does not normally make the child leave, but a temporary in-zone address used to secure enrolment can be investigated.

Read the national guides to out-of-zone enrolment and ballots and moving house and school zones. For school quality and fit, keep the zone answer separate from the evidence in our guide to the best schools in Wellington.

Wellington school-zone questions

How do I find my school zone in Wellington?

Enter the full address into the checker on this page. It compares that point with current Ministry of Education home-zone boundaries and shows matching in-zone schools plus nearby options. Confirm an edge or high-stakes result with the school.

Can one Wellington address be in more than one school zone?

Yes. Primary, intermediate and secondary home zones overlap, and some same-level zones overlap too. The address checker returns every available boundary that covers the address.

Are Wellington school zones a fixed distance from each school?

No. Home zones are not circles or fixed radiuses. Their boundaries reflect school capacity, local population, roads and the surrounding school network, and they can run along or split streets, which matters in a hill city with a compressed street layout.

Can my child apply to a Wellington school from out of zone?

Yes, if the school advertises out-of-zone places. At a state school, applications follow the six legal priority groups, and a supervised ballot is used within a priority group when applications exceed places. State-integrated schools (such as most Catholic schools) work differently: places go first to applicants with a preference connection to the school's special character, so an address alone doesn't secure a place.
