School year levels

NZ Year Level Calculator

Enter your child's birth month and birth year to estimate their NZ year level and Year 0–13 timeline.

Most children can start school once they turn 5. School is compulsory by their sixth birthday, so confirm enrolment timing with the school.

How the estimate works

This calculator uses birth month as a simple proxy for first school timing: January-June births are estimated as Year 1 in the year they turn 5, while July-December births are estimated as Year 0 first and Year 1 the next January. The official Ministry funding-year rule is based on the exact first school day, so confirm with your school if your child starts around mid-year or through cohort entry.

Common questions

Is the Year 0 cutoff May or July?
The official Ministry funding-year rule we found is not May. It uses the child's first day at school: on or before 1 July is Year 1 for that year, while after 1 July is Year 0 for the rest of that year. This calculator estimates that from birth month, because it does not ask for the exact first school day.
What is Year 0?
Year 0 is a label commonly used for children who first attend school after the 1 July funding-year cutoff. It is not a setback or a measure of progress. They usually move into Year 1 at the start of the next calendar year.
How does cohort entry affect this?
Many schools still use continuous entry, where children start on or after their fifth birthday. Cohort-entry schools start new children in groups on set dates. If cohort entry moves a child's actual first school day from June to July, the school may treat their placement differently from this birth-month estimate.
When does my child have to be enrolled?
Most children can start school once they turn 5. Schooling is compulsory from age 6, so children need to be enrolled by their sixth birthday unless they are formally home educated.
Does this match every school?
No calculator can guarantee this for every child. Ministry funding year level is separate from current classroom/year placement, and schools can adjust current year level. Use this as a planning estimate, then confirm with the school.
