Most of what we've published so far helps you judge a school once you're looking at it: what the EQI does and doesn't tell you, how to read ERO's new colour ratings. This guide is about the question that comes before any of that. Can your child actually get in?

The short version: if you live in a school's home zone, your child has a legal right to a place. If you don't, you're applying for whatever places are left, in a priority order set by law, usually decided by ballot. In BoundFor's current Ministry of Education-derived directory, 1,296 of 2,579 New Zealand schools are marked as operating an enrolment scheme (data updated July 2026). This guide covers what a zone is, what it entitles you to, how ballots work, and the address rules that catch families out.
